Lakeside park, Nelson's largest, has a lot to offer. One example is a series of granite informational signs, each providing a tidbit of local history. This plaque is to be found along Lakeside Walk near the fitness stop in the centre of the park.

Nelson's waterfront pathway fulfilled the 1930s dream of City Councillor Ross Fleming when it was chosen as Nelson's official 1997 Centennial Project. The pathway skirts the Chahko Mika Mall which opened on September 11, 1980. Chahko Mika is a Chinook Jargon expression which translates "Everybody Come!"

Just east of the mall along the original shore is the site of former Walton Boatworks, manufacturers of wooden pleasure boats until the 1960s. Walton's built Lewis Gilbert's record holding 68 MPH Ladybird speedboat. Powered by a modified WWI Liberty aircraft engine, the sleek craft was the champion of Kootenay Lake until finally defeated by Jiggs Mauriello's Miss Mercury II hydroplane in 1949.
