This seven circuit labyrinth at the head of St.Columba's Bay, Port na Curaich, on the southern shore of Iona, is made of rocks collected from the beach. It's classical in design and approximately 8m in diameter.
It is said that the current layout was installed in 2001 but there is a story on the island that it was put there by the monks from the Abbey who were sent here [to make it] as punishment for some misdemeanour or other. This may or may not be true and the current site may or may not be the original. There is also a smaller 5-circuit layout closer to the beach also made of stones collected therefrom but it is not so well defined and may well be a modern copy.
Either way it's a remote and spiritual place, being where St.Columba and his twelve monks first landed on Iona when fleeing from troubles and persecution in Ireland in 563AD.
It is always open and available for meditation.
