"The Doerr-Brown House faces North at 17 East St. Joseph Street, Perryville, Missouri. The brick Missouri-German "L" shaped residence is thought to have been constructed at this location between 1877-1879. The date is based on tax assessment increases shown during these years. The six room structure, two and one half stories in front and one story on the side, measures 38' 10" on the north facade, 42' 2" west, 18' east (plus a porch 6' x 13' 8"), and 22' 3" south and rests on a quarry hewn limestone foundation which appears 18" above ground level.
Victorian Italianate wooden elements decorate the entrance, windows and eaves of the rectangular two storied block. A photograph taken ca. 1890 shows a porch with latticed banisters and a pierced rail running around the porch roof. These elements have been replaced by a porch of classical design using columns and half columns as supports. The entrance contains two, three paned sidelights, left and right of the door, with a transom above. The twin arch motif of the door panels reflects the segmental brick arches of two windows placed symmetrically on either side of the porch. The balanced plan of the entrance is mirrored on the second level with the exception of the sidelights on the doorway above the porch. The brick arches and double hung, two over two window sash continue around the house, with the exception of two small double paned square sashed windows located in the attic on each side. Brackets occur under . , the eaves of the metal gabled roof to complete the exterior decoration of the two storied block.
Three chimneys are incorporated into the 14" thick brick walls. One at each end of the two storied structure furnished heat to the two upstairs rooms and the two rooms downstairs. The upstairs is reached by a central staircase where the original banister remains intact. Some locks and grain work appear on the interior doors to guide the restoration efforts of the current owners. The baseboards, door frames and mouldings remain intact and window screens installed into guides inside the sash continue to function. The attic is reached from the upper landing by an enclosed staircase. The third chimney serviced the kitchen and dining room located in the one story block to the rear. The kitchen is entered through an enclosed porch where a pull-up door leads to the basement. Limestone walls and a brick floor enclose this lowest level below the kitchen and dining room." - National Register Nominiation
The building for several years served as the Perry County Museum of History however it is now used as a law office. It is in very good condition and is well maintained.
