This demonstration rain garden is located just outside the Cook County Courthouse, and captures rainwater from the parking lot. Constructed in 2010, it was created to prevent salt, oil, and other pollution from running into Lake Superior through the city storm sewers. A sign explains how it works, teaches the importance of rain gardens, and relates how the community benefits from it. The 1,000 square foot garden includes such plants as: blue flag iris, red osier dogwood, joe-pye weed, graceful sedge, and fringed brome grass.
It is sponsored by the Cook County Soil and Water Conservation, the Coastal Zone Management Area, and NOAA Ocean and Coastal Resource Management in cooperation with Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program.
Address: 411 2nd St. Grand Marais, MN USA 55604
