Eleven of the rider change stations (for fresh horses) were in Nevada. Single young men, and particularly orphans (politically incorrect?!) were encouraged to ride for the Pony Express.
It continued for 18 months and carried news of Lincoln's election to the West coast.
It ended witht he completion of telegraph service.
The Pony Express ride is reenacted annually by volunteer riders to commemorate those early riders.
