Thoburn United Methodist Church was the second Methodist Episcopal Church built in Bay City. Thoburn United Methodist Church originated as one of three mission congregations known as the Wenona Charge, that included Portsmuth, Wenona, and Bangor (later Bay City). Reverend William Dawe and Reverend Davis came from Bay City's eastside and began holding services in the winter of 1866. Joseph Trombly (1809-1882), who platted the village of Bangor as well as opened the first post office, donated the land for the future church building. The present frame church was erected by the congregation during the summer of 1867 during the pastorate of Reverend A.C. Shaw. The church continues to be used for regular religious worship.
Description:
The Thoburn United Methodist Church is a one-story, gable-roofed, clapboard-covered structure, now sheathed in vinyl siding, which is topped by a multi-gabled square belfry. Front and side facade lights are surmounted by dripstone hood molds, and the structure rests on an elevated basement foundation. The building's sheathing in vinyl siding has not significantly affected its architectural integrity.
