1880: U.S. presidential election: James Garfield defeats Winfield S. Hancock.
1890: Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh moves to Auvers-sur-Oise on the edge of Paris in the care of Dr Paul Gachet where he will produce around seventy paintings in as many days.
1900: The United States Census estimates the country's population to be about 70 million people.
1910: Mexican Revolution: Francisco I. Madero proclaims the elections of 1910 null and void, and calls for an armed revolution at 6 p.m. against the illegitimate presidency/dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz.
1920: A woman named Anna Anderson tries to commit suicide in Berlin and is taken to a mental hospital, where she claims she is Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia.
1930: Building of the Boulder Dam (later known as the Hoover Dam) is started on the Colorado River in the United States.
1940: The first Tacoma Narrows Bridge opens for business, built with an 8-foot (2.4 m) girder and 190 feet (58 m) above the water, as the third longest suspension bridge in the world.
1950: The comic strip Beetle Bailey is created by Mort Walker.
1960: President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower signs the Civil Rights Act of 1960 into law.
1970: The New York Knicks win their first NBA championship, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 113-99 in Game 7 of the world championship series at Madison Square Garden.
1981: The Brazilian double decker boat Novo Amapo capsizes in the Amazon River, Belem de Cajari, Macapa, Brazil; 230 are killed.
