An 8' high granite sculpture of a Union standard bearer stands on a 24' by 7' square granite base. The soldier is wearing a Union uniform with a cap, short jacket, and buttoned-up shirt. His right hand is reaching across his body to hold the hilt of a sword on his left side. he holds a flagpole in the crook of his right arm. Below on the pedestal and shaft are reliefs of crossed rifles, a wreath with the letters G.A.R., a band of stars, and United States shields.
The sculpture was fabricated by the Smith Granite Company and Joseph Bedford did the stone cutting. The monument was installed next to the town hall in 1885.
The front dado is inscribed:
