Mamaku is a small rural settlement near Rotorua. European settlement commenced in the 1880s, and the first and only school, Mamaku School, was opened in 1885.
The main industry in Mamaku was originally native timber logging. In the late 19th century and early 20th century Mamaku had, at one time, 5 timber mills, all logging native timber from the surrounding bush. This reduced over time and today there is a single timber mill operating in the heart of the village.
St Peters On The Rock is an Anglican church built in 1911. About 100 past and present residents of the town gathered to celebrate the centennial in November 2011 with the opening of a time capsule, which was originally a milk bottle, found buried under the church in 1911 when the church was built.
