In 1929, the Daughters of the American Revolution this land for use as a state park. Over the years additional acres have been acquired, most notably both Upper and Lower Highland Lakes. These lakes are the most popular features of the park.
The park offers swimming, non-motorized boating, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. There are also picnic facilities and a campground. In winter ice fishing and cross-country skiing are popular activities.
