A 6' high by 1.5' by 1.5' granite figure of a Union soldier stands on a 9.5' high by 6' square granite base. The monument was fabricated by the Fox-Becker Granite Company and dedicated in May 1911.
The soldier is dressed in a Union uniform. He is wearing a moustache, cap, knee length coat and cape. He is holding a rifle vertically in front of left hand over right with the butt touching the ground by his right foot. His left foot is placed slightly forward.
A bronze plaque on the front of the base is inscribed:

AND SAILORS WHO FOUGHT
TO PRESERVE THE UNION
1861-1865
