After the S. S. Titanic was struck by the iceberg, the band continued to play, to keep the passengers calm while they boarded the life rafts. None of the band members survived the disaster.
As well as being the band leader, Hartley was an accomplished violinist and when his body was found in the sea, it had his violin case strapped round his shoulders.
There is a relief carving of a violin at the base of the gravestone together with some words from the hymn "Nearer My God To Thee" which he is reputed to have introduced to the congregation of his local church.
Because of his link with the S. S. Titanic someone has placed a small plastic model of the ship on the shaft of the violin.
