Barstow was an important stop along Route 66. Travelers coming west had just crossed miles of the Mohave Desert with little in the way of supporting communities since Kingman, Arizona. Travelers headed east stopped here to prepare fro that same forbidding stretch of desert. The museum is only a few blocks from the actual path of Route 66 through Barstow but preserves many artifacts from the days of Route 66 in Barstow and the Mojave River Valley area.
