Although the school has seen numerous renovations, it is still a marvel of architecture. The most recent addition, the North Wing, was added in 2001. According to Wikipedia, one feature which no longer exists is the bell tower which used to be part of the original structure. It was removed in 1916 due to to fear that it would cause structural damage.
The school's mascot is a bulldog called "Pug."
It is also known as being the home of Springfield's original all female drum and bugle corps, the Kilties. They were started in the 1920s by a Scotsman who was the school's band director. Eventually, each of the high schools had such a corps although a number disbanded starting in the 1980s due to lack of interest. The Kilties, however, still exist and are an award winning group.
