The milestone should be giving us the distance to both Leeds and Liverpool. The tree has covered the half of the milestone that gives the distance to Leeds.

The only thing the milestone now tells us is that the distance to the end of the canal at Liverpool is 47 miles.

Provided you know that the length of the canal is 127 miles then you also know that Leeds is 80 miles away. Otherwise you'll just have to guess.

Just in case you're interested this is what a normal milestone looks like. link
