This wooden sign is located at the southeast corner of the Black Jack Cemetery in Rural Douglas County, Ks. The cemetery is located south of US-56 on E 2080 Rd. The text of the marker reads:
[l]Black Jack Town Site [/l]
The town was established in 1857 by local men who surveyed twenty blocks on 40 acres. The main street ran east and west along the original Santa Fe Trail. The name original from a grove of Blackjack Oak on a tributary of Captain's Creek, 1/4 west. A fort was located here during the Civil War. The town was abandoned in the 1870's, after the trail traffic was gone and the Santa Fe Railroad went through Wellsville.
