John Dudley was born February 25, 1758 in Connecticut. In 1776 he lived in Newport, Cheshire County, New Hampshire where he enlisted in the local militia at the age of 18. The militia was call up and ordered to Fort Ticonderoga. From there he and is unit later went to Newtown, Pennsylvania, arriving in early December to join the main forces of General George Washington’s army. From Newtown, Pennsylvania the forces proceeded to Trenton, New Jersey and Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware. Here, for the first time, on December 26, 1776, John Dudley met the enemy British Forces. After the Battle of Trenton his enlistment expired however he reenlisted the same day his first enlistment ended. After this enlistment ended he went home where he again joined the local militia and was ordered back to Fort Ticonderoga. To read a more complete history of John Dudley's service and life
