There is a lot of hatred between local photographers in Luxton Deeping. In one camp are the traditionalist photographers led by camera shop owner Headley Madrigal, in the other digital photographers led by Steve Bright. Things come to head at the annual photographic competition, where the organisers ban digital photographs. There is an altercation between Steve Bright and Lionel Bell. Joyce and Tom are at the competition and are taken aback by a recent photo of Tom kissing an old flame, Lionel Bell’s ex wife.

Lionel Bell had been taking photographs of trees. He is attacked and murdered. A camera disk is found in his mouth. The disk contains pictures of a model in a swimsuit. At Bell’s house there are two glasses and a bottle of wine. When tested for prints there are Barnaby’s prints on the glass. Barnaby’s name is also in Bell’s diary. The glass, diary and the photograph get Barnaby officially taken off the case. Instead Inspector Martin Spellman is assigned. Spellman is to get married and his mind is elsewhere.

Some time later Steve Bright is found strangled. This time he has a roll of film in his mouth. Again there are pictures of the blond model. Simon Madrigal invites Barnaby to his developing lab to talk about the blond. Apparently Lionel Bell and Steve Bright had used the model at the Causton Photographic Society. Jones goes to see Nigel Woodley, the head of Causton Photographic Society. He produces a picture of the blond women, a brunette without a wig, and it is Spellman’s fiancé.

The Barnabys get an invitation to the Golden Hind Hotel, with a half price offer for being regular customers. When the waiter refuses to honour the offer Barnaby talks to the manager. There have been regular liaisons at the hotel in the name of Barnaby.

Barnaby goes to see one of the traditional photographers, Eddie Carfax. Carfax tells him that Simon Madrigal, Lione Bell and himself had been members of the Causton Photographical Society behind Headley Madrigal’s back. They had photographed the blond model and Steve Bright and Lionel Bell had fallen out over her. Barnaby now realises that the deaths are related to jealousy over the model. When Barnaby realises he has had his warrant card stolen at Simon Madrigal’s lab, he works out Simon is the murderer. Jones and Barnaby arrive just in time to stop Madrigal killing Spellman. Madrigal had originally thought the model’s boyfriend was Barnaby, largely due to Spellman using Barnaby’s name at the hotel for his trysts.
