Alex (pronounced Alek by residents) is a small farming community south of the Washita River in Grady County. Originally settled in 1881, the post office was established in 1885. Today, the population is between 550 and 600 people.

On 4th Street, just south of "J" Street, this metal dome-roofed water tower was in use by the town until only a few years ago when a cylindrical masonry tower was constructed just south of this one.

These water towers are a common sight in rural Oklahoma. As a point of interest, the town of Rush Springs, about 12 miles southwest of Alex has used the dome roof from their old water tower as the unique roof of a gazebo in their town park.
