The Alex public school complex of buildings serves this small community of about 550-600 people, south of the Washita River in Grady County. Though small, this school system has a reputation for excellence in education.

On 2nd Street in front of the school auditorium, stands a pillar of brick about eight feet high which stands in a small circular garden. Among the bricks are approximately 250 engraved bricks, honoring those who provided the necessary funds for this monument.

A plaque on the pillar shows that the display is in memory of Worth Dickey, who taught in the Alex school for forty years and served as principal in several schools. Atop the pillar is a large school bell which once rang from a previous school building.
