The Hargrove Pivot Bridge was constructed in 1917 by the Miller and Borcherding Bridge Builders of St. Louis. The structure is 220 feet long, including the approaches to the bridge. It features a 100 turning span with a concrete turntable support. The turntable pivot was designed so boatmen could turn the bridge using a handcrank on shore for their use. Until 1942 the Black River was kept as a navigable waterway by the Army Corps of Engineers for steamboat, logboat, and other river boat traffic. The bridge has not been turned since then due to the lack of river traffic.
The bridge was damaged significantly in the flood of 1992 and the bridge was closed. The bridge was rehabilitated beginning and 1998 and reopened to traffic on July 2, 1999. The single lane bridge is restricted to 8 ton load limits and 8-foot height.
