According to the booklet published by the Leeds & Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (1992), the land was orginally patented in 1803 by the Crown to John Snyder, a Pre-revolutionary British Army officer. In 1825 part of the land was granted by Snyder to the Wesleyan Methodist Mission, for the express purpose of building a mission house, with the surrounding land to be used as a burial place...Evidence indicates that the land was actually in use as a cemetery prior to the official land transfer. At least one standing stone records the interment, in 1817, of John Smith. It is surmised that even earlier markers have fallen victim to weather and age. Tradition suggests that the earliest known burial was provided to the frozen remains of an Indian, discovered in the bush in 1797.According to the list of monumental inscriptions, more than 3000 individuals are buried here.
