The National Hobo Cemetery is located on the eastern edge of the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, Iowa, east of the intersection of Diagonal Street and 6th Avenue SE. Currently there are about 38 graves or concrete memorials placed in memory of departed hobos. 28 of these plots are actual internments. The rest of the markers honor the departed hobos who were regular "conventioneers" but who are interred elsewhere.
Britt, Iowa has hosted the National Hobo Convention since 1900. In the 4 years prior to 1900 it was known as the annual convention of Tourist Union No. 63.
Ironically, on the day we visited, the waste disposal facility adjacent to the cemetery was burning piles of yard waste/clippings. The smoke that hung over the cemetery had a very woodsy campfire smell. Fitting.
