The Boy on a Swan (Danish: Drengen På Svanen)is a 5' high bronze sculpture in the center of a fountain in the Rosenborg Castle Gardens. A 4' high boy is straddling a larger swan. He has his hands around the neck of the swan, which is pointing straight up. The swan has its wings slightly outspread while spraying a stream of water straight up from its beak. The water, then, falls back down onto the sculpture and into a 40' diameter circular granite basin.
The sculpture was created by Hermann Ernst Freund in 1837. It replaced a similar sandstone sculpture that was originally installed in 1738. A sign near the fountain is inscribed:
DRENGEN PÅ SVANEN
AF HERMANN ERNST FREUND
1785 - 1840
