Beth’s dad wants Beth to leave Lovejoy’s establishment. Lovejoy meets her dad at the Half Moon to try and talk him out of it.

Lovejoy has a commission from Charlie Gimbert to buy books to restock the library at Felsham Hall. To this end Lovejoy and Charlotte are at the Cambridge Antiques fair, and Beth and Tinker are putting flyers through letter boxes.
One of Beth’s flyers falls through the letter box of Faith and Hope Doncaster. They are in financial trouble and need to sell some antiques, so ring up Lovejoy. Lovejoy cannot do anything about their antiques, but notices, in a painting of their missionary father, a Marston bible. When asked about the bible they tell Lovejoy that their brother, Raymond, has the bible. Lovejoy contacts Raymond, a fellow at a Cambridge college, and has dinner at the college. At the college he finds out that Raymond is to be made Master and that he is donating the Marston bible to the College library.
Lovejoy gets Raymond to have lunch at Charlie Gimbert’s house while Lovejoy and Beth break into Raymond’s room. They find the Marston bible, but it’s a fake. Lovejoy gets invited to tea, along with Faith and Hope, and confronts Raymond after they have gone. Raymond confesses to selling the bible to cover up the debys his father ran up by fidlling the mission accounts.
Raymond needs to produce a genuine bible for his Masters inauguration. Lovejoy tries to get a genuine Marston bible for the day, hoping to swap it for the fake before it disappears into the library. He persuades Charlie Gimbert to buy the genuine Marston bible that Raymond sold, but when it is bought then finds it too is a copy. Obviously Raymond’s dad had already sold the original. In desperation Lovejoy and Raymond swap the fake with a genuine Marston bible in a nearby priory. When Lovejoy returns the bible to the priory he finds that that is also a fake.
