Lovejoy has a visitation by a thug called Rathbone. He escorts Lovejoy in a stretched limo to meet Sandy Litvak. Lovejoy borrowed £6000 to finance a deal which went sour. The original money lender has died and Sandy Litvak has inherited the loan. Litvak ups the money owed to £14,000 and gives Lovejoy five days to pay.
Jerry Boyle is inside for stealing some French paperweights. Ironically the owner has left them to him in the will. Sniffing an opportunity, Lovejoy visits Boyle in prison. Boyle gives Lovejoy information about an auction at Byfield Manor. Tinker and Lovejoy go to the Manor via a local pub. At the pub they find a rare silver tankard, worth £2,500. They manage to buy it from the landlord cheaply. They have a pre-sale look at the contents and discover a kakiemon tiger amongst some garden items. The tiger is worth £12,000 if Lovejoy manages to buy it.
Eric meanwhile is despatched with Beth to sell an oak chest that Eric and Tinker collected earlier. Lovejoy needs the cash, but Eric sees a table in a shop and buys it for £500, thinking that Lovejoy would be pleased. Eric explains to Lovejoy that they had supplied one to Lady Felsham. Lovejoy points out it is the table they supplied and that Charlie Gimbert had sold it for £300.
On the day of the sale the whole team are out and about removing directions to the sale. Lovejoy, Beth and Tinker jam the phonelines, and Eric is despatched to act as a steward turning people away. The only competition to Lovejoy is locked in the loo by Lovejoy and the coast is clear. Tinker manages to buy the garden items for £10.
Litvak visits Lovejoy on the due day and relieves him of the tiger and the tankard. He also appropriates the French paperweights that Lovejoy has just sold to Charlie Gimbert. Charlie isn’t best pleased, but doesn’t complain to Litvak.
