Eric and Tinker leave Felsham (Belchamp) Hall to sell Lady Jane’s carpet. Tinker returns on his bicycle later with the professor’s report on Uncle Said’s carpet.

After a row with her husband, Lady Jane decides to sell her Moroccan carpet. Lovejoy puts it into auction and it is bought by a carpet dealer. Another Moroccan carpet is in the auction, normally valued at £200. Amazingly it fetches £1200 and a young Moroccan lad gets very heated about not winning the bid. The winning bid is by a retired school teacher, Harriet Fisher, and her housekeeper Russell Potts. Russell is an old friend of Tinker’s.
Tinker gets Lovejoy an introduction to Harriet, who wants to de-clutter her house. Lovejoy spots a ching dynasty vase and gets Harriet to agree to sell it, providing Lovejoy can find a replacement umbrella stand. He also gets her to agree to using the rug as bait to find out why the young man was keen to buy it. Lovejoy replaces Harriet’s rug with a similar one. A little later the young man calls on Harriet, as a carpet cleaner, and steals Lovejoy’s carpet.
Meanwhile Lovejoy puts Harriet’s carpet back into auction. Again the price of the carpet rockets due to the young man and his uncle. Tinker is authorised to compete in the bidding, and this time Tinker acquires the carpet for £1400. Later, at Lovejoy’s house the young man again steals the carpet. This time Eric follows him on his bike. Lovejoy happens to join in the chase and they arrest the young man, called Abdel. Abdel tells Lovejoy that he is looking for a sign in the carpet as an answer to his marriage proposal. When Lovejoy confronts his Uncle Said, a carpet importer, he tells Lovejoy the same thing, but when pressed he confesses to have found a rare carpet design and was using the auction to test the waters as to its value.
Tinker is despatched to find an Islamic expert that can prove or disprove Said’s account. Tinker is successful, and the academic confirms its scholastic value. Lovejoy manages to do a deal with Said to get Lady Jane’s carpet back. Lady Jane and Lord Felsham are splitting up and Lovejoy wants to cheer Lady Jane up by returning her favourite carpet to her.
