Lovejoy is supposed to meet Sam Whendle at a cricket match. Unfortunately Sam is being pursued and has a heart attack on the cricket pitch, before he can tell Lovejoy why he wants to see him.
At the funeral Sam’s widow shows Lovejoy a music box. It is a fake. Later the music box is stolen by a visiting priest. Lovejoy goes in search of the music box and catches up with the fake priest at the Rosery Hotel. He manages to snatch the music box back from a con man called Smiley O’Riley. O Riley does pull a gun on Lovejoy though.
Lady Jane identifies the tune on the box and its association with sleepers. Obviously Sam had got some antique sleepers hidden somewhere for his retirement. The last work that Sam did had been at a house where there had been a fire. Lovejoy visits the lady of the house and realises that the fire had allegedly destroyed many valuable antiques.
In the local church Lady Jane finds a vault cover that Sam had restored. It has the inscription Sleepers Awake and above it is the name on the music box. Later that night Lovejoy, Eric and Tinker break into the church and enter the vault. In the vault are the antiques, and Smiley O’Riley. O’Riley takes the loot and locks Lovejoy in the church. Lovejoy rings the church bells and is released. He returns to the house and confronts O’Riley and the lady of the house. Meanwhile Lady Jane has sent the police to arrest the conspirators.
