Tomar it's a lovely town in Central Portugal with an intense historical significance. And in this town one can find Cine-Teatro Paraíso, located right in the center.
This movie theater is located on the very same spot where the first entertainment room was established, in 1800. In 1876 the original building was renovated and it took the name of Teatro Nabantino. It was here that for the first time the people of Tomar had the privilege to assist to a movie, in 1901.
In 1919 the place was renovated again. Well, actually, the old theater was razed and on the same spot the current Cine-Teatro Paraiso was built. The project was designed by the architect Deolindo Vieira, following the Italian architectonic influence. The new theater was inaugurated on the 24th March 1924.
During the 40's further renovation took place, directed by architect Ernesto Korrodi, specially working the indoors, creating a cafe and
a party saloon. It opened with the new additions on the 18th December 1947.
The theater closed in 1991, th ebuilding was bought by the City almost as a ruin, renovated it and opened it in 2002.
Nowadays it works as a theater with 410 seats.
