It is thought that the millstone came from a mill in Bird's Mill about 10 miles east of the stone's currently location. Bird's Mill is along the Mississippi River opposite its confluence with the Ohio River. The stone is the bottom stone from the mill. It is not known if the mill was water or animal powered. The stone has been at the house since shortly after its construction in 1899.
