The overhead model of the solar system of the Springfield Science Museum is augmented by blue neon lights to indicate the orbits of the planets. The ceiling model has the traditional nine planets scaled to size. The sun is represented by a lighted segment.
The positioning and alignment of the planets requires two views. The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Jupiter clustered are towards the north end of the building. Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and the dwarf planet Pluto fill the south end. The solar system fills the building, yet on this scale the outer planets would lie outside the museum, so adjustments for distance were in order.
