The marker reads:
Alexandra Hotel
The Alexandra Hotel, owned by J.H. Johnson, opened in 1915. It was Prince George's finest hotel, featuring a lavish bathroom and steam laundry. In 1923, Mr. Johnson received an offer that he could not refuse and sold his building to the provincial government for $48,500. It was then used to house the courtroom, prison, police station, and more. By 1959, the old Alexandra Hotel was torn down to make way for a Kresge's store which opened in 1961.
In 1919, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire visited Prince George and stayed at the Alexandra Hotel. J.H. Johnson did his best to make a good impression on his honoured guests and organized a horse race for their entertainment, as well as a fancy dinner and ball. He managed to provide the Duke, Duchess, and their party of thirty with mint julep drinks -- even though Prohibition was in effect. Mr. Johnson simply talked to the bootleggers and told them to find the necessary alcoholic ingredients -- or else!
