1950: Albert Einstein warns that nuclear war could lead to mutual destruction
1960: The 1960 Winter Olympic Games begin at the Squaw Valley Ski Resort, in Placer County, California.
1970: Mick Jagger is fined £200 for possession of cannabis.
1980: Canadian caper: Six United States diplomats, posing as Canadians, manage to escape from Tehran, Iran as they board a flight to Zürich, Switzerland.
1990: Martin Luther King Day Crash - Telephone service in Atlanta, St. Louis, and Detroit, including 9-1-1 service, goes down for nine hours, due to an AT&T software bug.
2000: The PlayStation 2 is released in Japan. Several months later it becomes the best-selling game console of all time.
