(Taken from his obituary, found on findagrave.com)
"He enlisted in the army in Buckingham County, Va. in 1776 and served as private in the Virginia Regiment. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and others. He received his discharge after 3 1/2 years of service. It was found that he lived in Kentucky in 1818 and was living in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1826. His will was written in the courts here. His death occurred Feb. 10, 1837.
A hollow log formed the coffin for Chandler as he was taken to Danner's Chapel in an oxen drawn wagon driven by a young man named William Noblett. In 1936, James Walker who was then 78 years of age told Mrs. Myrtle Mavity that he grew up in Southeast Township on the old Chandler farm which was then owned by his father. He said that his father often reminded the children that a hero once lived on the farm."
