The second church built at Kirk Hill, on the north west hill diagonally across from St. Columba Presbyterian Church. It is located in Lochiel 7th Concession lot #27 north side of road.
This church was formed as a result of the Disruption in Scotland when the Free Church split away from the state Church of Scotland. Deputies from Scotland came to nearby Lochiel in 1845 and persuaded many to form a Lochiel Free Church. The building of a large stone church was approved, and for two years, the future congregation had to break from their farming in order to quarry the stones, cut the timbers and haul to the site.
The church was dedicated in 1850. In 1919, a classical belfry and steeple were added along with the front porch.
This congregation, which became part of the United Church of Canada in 1925, still holds services and maintains an important place within the community. With its memorial gates with plaques reading "Chuimhneachen" (Gaelic for - In memory of) and its setting south of the century-old, MacGillivray property east of Laggan, the Kirk Hill United Church of Canada is a symbol of local history and rural spirituality.
