Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848 - 1907) is one of America's most famous and prolific sculptors. During his life he created well over 100 sculptures. His final sculpture was a relief sculpture of his wife Augusta. The work was completed in 1907. At that time Saint-Gaudens was terminally ill with cancer and could not even walk.
The plaster relief depicts his wife in left profile wearing a period high collar dress with a bustle. She is holding basket of flowers in her right arm and hand.
A plaque next to the sculpture provides the details:
Augusta Homer Saint-Gaudens
The portrait of his wife is the last relief made by Saint-Gaudens
It is in a deliberately impressionistic style and full of personal
symbolism.
Plaster, 1905-1907
