Dickey Ridge is located on Skyline Drive adn was developed by the Virginia Sky-Line Company in 1938. It is located within the Skyline Drive Historic District which was designated a National Historic Landmark on October 6, 2008. It is nationally significant under NHL Criteria 1 and 4 which aligns with NR Criterion A in the areas of, transportation, social history, entertainment/recreation, politics/government, and conservation, and Criterion C in the areas of landscape architecture, architecture, planning, and engineering. In the 1950’s original tourist cabins were moved to Skyland and Lewis Mountain. Designed by Architect Marcellus Wright for the park concessionaire, the visitor center was originally built as a lodge but converted to this Visitor Center in 1958.
The Visitor Center Structure, built in 1938, altered in 1951, renovated for accessibility and restored in 1995 and finally preserved in 2000, is a Frame building on concrete and stone foundation. Exterior walls wood siding; gable roofs covered w/ cement shingles. 1 1/2 story w/ 5 distinct sections.
