I næsten 200 år fungerede den prægtige gule murstensbygning på toppen af bakken over Tøjhushaven som tøjhus for den danske hær. Et tøjhus er en gammel betegnelse for et arsenal og tøjhuset i Randers fungerede som våbenlager og depot for artilleriet i den del af Jylland som lå nord for Kongeåen. Ved en tidlig udbygning blev her også plads til soldater og stedet fungerede i mindre omfang også som kaserne.
Nørrejyllands Tøjhus blev opført i 1801, og udbygget i 1805, af arkitekt og bygmester Anders Kruuse. Opførelsen af tøjhuset var en del af reorganiseringen af det danske forsvar efter slaget på Reden d. 2. april 1801.
Slaget på Københavns Red skabte landet over en patriotisk stemning. Som resultat af denne voksende nationalfølelse kunne Nørrejyllands Tøjhus opføres for midler indsamlet blandt Jyllands befolkning.
I 1800-tallet blev alt tungt materiel sejlet på en kanal, der gik fra Randers Fjord til kanonrampen, som stadig ses på den side af Tøjhuset der vender ud mod Tøjhushaven.
Tøjhuset var i brug som depot frem til 1995. Det blev solgt til en privat ejer i 2000 og dele af bygningen er idag indrettet som lejligheder.
In nearly 200 years this stately yellow brick building on top of the hill above Tøjhushaven served as Tøjhus of the Danish army. A Tøjhus is an old term for an arsenal and Tøjhuset in Randers served as a weapons depot for the artillery in the part of Jutland north of Kongeåen. From 1805 the building also served as barracks.
Nørrejyllands Tøjhus was built in 1801 and expanded in 1805, by the architect and builder Anders Kruuse. The construction of the armory was part of the reorganization of the Danish armed forces after the Battle of Copenhagen on 2 april, 1801.
The Battle of Copenhagen resulted in a growing patriotic mood all over Denmark. As a result of this growing national sentiment, Nørrejyllands Tøjhus were built with funds collected from the Jutland population.
In the 1800s all heavy equipment were sailed on a channel that went from Randers Fjord to the cannon ramp, which can still be seen on the side of Tøjhuset facing Tøjhushaven.
Tøjhuset was in use as a depot until 1995. It was sold to a private owner in 2000 and parts of the building is today converted into apartments.
