The Fire Department in Colton was established as a Fire Brigade in 1890. Its first equipment was a hand pumper. The Fire District was established in 1894.

The first engine house opened in 1901. The first fire engine was purchased in 1925. The Department saw several changes of equipment and locales over the years. The district was split into two companies: Colton and South Colton, with each receiving new Fire Halls in 1957. Land for a new hall was purchased in 2007.

The two companies have been merged to form the Colton Fire Department.
