Official Description:
A standing figure of a Civil War soldier holding his rifle in front of him with both hands. On his back he carries a bed roll. The soldier stands atop a square stone base.
And Remark:
The monument honors the 164 men from Jackson County who served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The sculpture cost $1,400 and was funded with contributions and additional money Jackson County.
2/3rds up the heel on the steps from Main Street. The $1400 back then would be at least $33,000 now by simple inflation or $137,000 as equivalent unskilled labor value.
Bronze plaque on back of sculpture reads:
To our valiant Fathers: - Champions of Reconciliation with Justice, of Union with Manhood, of Peace with Honor; they fought with Failfulness, labored with Cheerfulness, and suffered in silence.
To our heroic Mothers: - Spartan in Devotion, Teuton in Sacrifice, in Patience superior to either, and in Modesty and Grace matchless among womankind.
