1904: 80,000 demonstrators gather in Hyde Park, London, to protest against the importation of Chinese labourers to South Africa by the British government.
1914: Katherine Routledge and her husband arrive in Easter Island to make the first true study of it
1924: J. Edgar Hoover is appointed head of the Bureau of Investigation.
1934: John Dillinger escapes from jail in Crown Point, Indiana, using a wooden pistol.
1944: German forces occupy Hungary in Operation Margarethe.
1954: Joey Giardello knocks out Willie Tory at Madison Square Garden, in the first televised boxing prize fight to be shown in colour.
