From the Smithsonian Inventory entry:
A bison which appears to be in midstride. Its front proper left hoof is raised, while the other three legs are touching the base. The front half, including the head, is textured with metal bars to represent animal hair. The rear half is smooth, and has cut-out gaps across the surface, forming swirling patterns.
