From the nearby informational sign:
"The Napoleon

Known technically as a 12-Pounder Field Gun, Model 1857, this bronze, smoothbore cannon was cast in 1862 at Miles Greenwood's "Eagle Foundry" in Cincinnati, OH. Such fieldpieces were the workhorses of the Civil War, comprising nearly 40% of the Union and Confederate artillery armament.

Of special note is the "profound impression" on the gun's breech - an indentation apparently caused by the direct hit of a solid projectile.

This cannon was presented to the City of Galena by the US War Department, arriving in April of 1865. The following month it was fired by local citizens in celebration of the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

It was displayed at the Galena Fairgrounds until 1882, when it was moved to the "soldier's monument lot" on the west side of the river. In 1891, with the creation of Grant Park, both the soldier's monument and the cannon were transferred to this site.

This cannon was restored and remounted in 2000 through the generous efforts of the City of Galena, The Galena Foundation and friends of Galena history."

Also visit the Soldier's Monument, Grant Monument and Spanish Cannon in the park, also waymarked.
