The Stadtsäule (City Column) of Rheinfelden was created by the local artist Leonhard Eder. It is located at the old bridge to the Swiss city of Rheinfelden, next to the customs office. The material is a shellbearing limestone, called Muschelkalk.
The two oversized hands with water flowing out between the fingers are a sybol for the power of the river and the old hydroelectric power plant that was cause of the growth of the municipality to a city. The chemical formulas etched into the side commemorate the important local chemical industry, mainly aluminium, chlorine and explosives. The other side has the names of all former mayors of the city engraved.
