This lovely Villa, which is now owned by heritage foundation FAI, is on a promontory that drops steeply into the lake, and it was once the site of a Franciscan hermitage dedicated to St. John. In 1787 the property was purchased by Angelo Maria Durini, pontifical legate and apostolic envoy for the isle of Malta. At the end of his glittering diplomatic career, Durini decided to create his dream of a peaceful location in which to study, read and discuss the arts.

He created the double-sided loggia, a true architectural invention, and he did much to create the magical atmosphere that attracted many personalities from the world of art and literature.

Over the following centuries, the property was acquired by Count Luigi Porro Lambertenghi, and later by the Arconati Visconti family.

In 1974, the building was purchased by Alpine climber Guido Monzino, famous for his epic ascents, and he created an international centre for the study of exploration, and for associated research.
