The New Cliff House (or Gilmore Hotel) overlooks the oceanfront at the historic Nye Beach resort area of Newport, Oregon. Development of the Nye Beach area as a tourist area began in 1893. A large “Sanitarium” was constructed in 1902 and by 1910 there were several small hotels, a bath house, boarding houses and recreation halls. Between 1911 and 1913 three large hotels were built. The New Cliff House was finished in 1913 for proprietor W.D. Wheeler. The building was constructed i the Craftsman style which was very fashionable for resorts in the 1910s. The building is on a sloping lot and starts as a three-story structure which increases to four-stories on the ocean side. The building is L-shaped which is approximately 80’ x 30’. In 1921 it was renamed as the Hotel Gilmore.
The building had fallen into disrepair but new owner had renovations planed when it was placed on the National Register on November 6, 1986. Following renovation it reopened as The Sylvia Beach Hotel and continues in operation today.
