A pair of cast-stone lions frame the steps leading up to the Belvedere between the Italian garden and the Rose Garden at the Sonnenberg estate. These gardens were established in the first decade of the 1900's.

Thes two lions hold a place of high honor at Sonnenberg Gardens between two of the oldest and largest of Mary Clark Thompson's gardens: visible from the library and the veranda on the mansion, and from the master bedroom porch upstairs.
