The glacier flows down the valley at a rate of 8 feet per day. Melt-water from the glacier is discharged from submarine tunnels.
Sometimes this water emerges at the inlet surface as fountains.
The amount of ice floating inside the inlet makes boat navigation unsafe at times.
The glacier was named after Johns Hopkins University in 1893 by H.F. Reid.
