Con man Marcus Richards has organised a quiz weekend at Chaucer College, with a prize of £5,000. There are six teams taking part, each team having two members. The teams are The Red Hot Mamas, a couple of young mothers, NUTs, a couple of primary school teachers, Toxic Debt, a couple of students, Grey Guardians, a couple of dons, The Old Contemptables, an army team, and Class of 89, a team of lawyers.

Ethan Croft, one of the primary school teachers, is found dead in the college fountain, and later Eve Rigby, one of the Red Hot Mamas is found dead in her room. Hathaway initially suspects murders of passion, but Lewis isn’t convinced. Lewis finds there are connections between the teams. Croft had been a lecturer at Chaucer college, but was sacked for having an affair with the wife of Prof Milner, one of the Grey Guardians. Croft had also been a translator for Prof Milner when he negotiated a deal with the Russians for sponsorship of Prof Milner’s new engineering building. Sebastian Anderson, one of the lawyers also worked on the Russian deal.

As the plot unfolds it becomes apparent that Anderson is the murderer. Hathaway finds that he has an entry in Who’s Who and is about to be knighted. In Who’s Who one of Anderson’s hobbies is martial arts. Andersen killed Croft to keep him quiet about money laundering that the Russians had been involved in. Eve Rigby was killed because Croft confided in her.
