Madeline Villiers and Jimmy Fong travel to Borneo and smuggle back a rare yellow Roth orchid. Madeline Villiers is found dead, poisoned by hemlock. Madeline Villiers is a member of the Midsomer Malham Orchis Society. Whilst Barnaby investigates her death, another member, Henry Plummer is found hanged in his garage, with his orchid collection destroyed. It is later found that Plummer was strangled before being hung.

Madeline Villiers had been preparing to go to Switzerland to get married. She has left some passionate diaries behind, but they are in latin. Barnaby enlists a local monk, Brother Robert, to translate. Barnaby finds that Madeline had a lover in Jonathan Makepiece, the assistant to Professor Margaret Winstanley, an orchid expert.

It is found that Madeline Villiers and Jimmy Fong have been orchid smugglers, and that Madeline Villiers had been selling them on for large sums. In particular the yellow Roth orchid had been offered for sale to Henry Plummer. The sale price had been £150,000, but Plummer had only paid £25,000. Barnaby deduces that Plummer was acting as a middle man for Munro Hilliard, another orchid collector.

After a long twisting investigation, Barnaby deduces that Jonathan Makepiece is the culprit. He was spurned by Madeline Villiers in favour of Jimmy Fong. He also wanted a piece of the smuggling action and was out to steal the yellow Roth orchid. Plummer’s wife had also wanted some of the action as well, and had sold the orchid on to Hilliard, before destroying his collection. Plummer and Hilliard had been killed by Makepiece because they wouldn’t pay him off
